What Is the Awe of God? Understanding Reverence, Obedience, and Praise.

Introduction: Rediscovering the Awe of God

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to lose sight of something deeply important—the awe of God. Many people think of God as loving and merciful, which is absolutely true. But Scripture also teaches that God is holy, powerful, and worthy of deep reverence.

The “awe of God,” often described as the “fear of the Lord,” is not about being afraid in a negative sense. Instead, it is about having a deep respect, honor, and reverence for who God is. It’s recognizing His greatness and responding with humility, obedience, and praise.

The Bible makes it clear that this awe is the foundation of a faithful life.

What Does the Awe (Fear) of God Mean?

The phrase “fear of the Lord” appears throughout the Bible. One of the clearest definitions comes from Book of Proverbs 9:10:

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

This verse shows us that awe of God is not fear that drives us away—it’s reverence that draws us closer. It is the starting point of wisdom because it aligns our hearts with God’s truth.

To stand in awe of God means:

  • Recognizing His holiness
  • Honoring His authority
  • Trusting His power
  • Submitting to His will

It’s a posture of the heart that says, “God, You are greater than me, and I trust You completely.”

The Awe of God Revealed in Scripture

Throughout the Bible, people encounter God and respond with awe. When Moses stood before the burning bush, he removed his sandals because he was on holy ground (Exodus 3:5). When Isaiah saw a vision of God’s glory, he cried out in humility, realizing his own unworthiness (Isaiah 6:5).

Even in the New Testament, the disciples were filled with awe when they witnessed the power of Jesus Christ calming the storm (Mark 4:41).

These moments remind us that encountering God changes us. His presence reveals both His greatness and our need for Him.

Why the Awe of God Leads to Obedience

True reverence for God naturally leads to obedience. When we understand who God is—holy, just, and all-powerful—we begin to take His Word seriously.

In Book of Deuteronomy 10:12–13, Scripture says:

“And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you
but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him,
to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart…”

This verse connects awe, love, and obedience. They are not separate—they work together.

Obedience is not about following rules out of obligation. It’s about responding to God’s greatness with a willing heart. When you truly stand in awe of God, you don’t want to live against His will—you want to honor Him.

Obedience as an Expression of Love

Jesus made this connection clear in Gospel of John 14:15:

“If you love me, keep my commands.”

This simple statement carries a powerful truth: obedience is an expression of love. It’s not about perfection, but about direction. It’s choosing God’s way, even when it’s difficult.

When we obey God:

  • We align our lives with His purpose
  • We experience spiritual growth
  • We build a deeper relationship with Him

Obedience flows naturally from a heart that reveres God.

The Awe of God Inspires Praise

Reverence for God doesn’t stop at obedience—it overflows into praise. When you truly understand who God is, worship becomes a natural response.

The Book of Psalms is filled with expressions of awe and praise. Psalm 95:6 declares:

“Come, let us bow down in worship,
let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.”

Praise is not just singing—it’s a lifestyle. It’s acknowledging God’s goodness, power, and faithfulness in every area of life.

Why Praise Matters

Praise shifts our focus. Instead of dwelling on our problems, we begin to see God’s greatness. It reminds us that He is in control, even when life feels uncertain.

In Book of Psalms 150:6, we read:

“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.”

Praise is not optional—it is a calling for every believer. It is how we honor God and declare His glory to the world.

Living in the Awe of God Daily

Understanding the awe of God is one thing—but living it out daily is another. Here are practical ways to cultivate a heart of reverence:

1. Spend Time in God’s Word

The more you read Scripture, the more you understand who God is. His Word reveals His character, His promises, and His will.

2. Develop a Consistent Prayer Life

Prayer keeps your heart aligned with God. It reminds you of your dependence on Him.

3. Choose Obedience Daily

Obedience is built through small, daily decisions. Choose integrity, kindness, and faithfulness, even when it’s hard.

4. Make Praise a Habit

Praise God not only in good times but also in challenges. Worship shifts your perspective and strengthens your faith.

The Blessings of Revering God

The Bible promises blessings for those who fear the Lord. In Book of Psalms 128:1, it says:

“Blessed are all who fear the Lord,
who walk in obedience to him.”

These blessings are not just material—they are spiritual. They include peace, wisdom, and a deeper relationship with God.

When you live in awe of God, you begin to experience life the way it was meant to be—guided by His truth and filled with His presence.

A Balanced View: Awe and Love Together

It’s important to understand that awe of God and love for God are not opposites—they are connected. God is both holy and loving, powerful and personal.

In First Epistle of John 4:18, we read:

“Perfect love drives out fear…”

This doesn’t eliminate reverence—it transforms it. We don’t fear God as a distant authority, but we honor Him as a loving Father who is still holy and just.

Final Thoughts: Returning to Reverence

The awe of God is something every believer should seek. It brings clarity, purpose, and direction to our lives. It leads us to obey God not out of fear, but out of love. And it inspires us to praise Him with all that we are.

In a world that often minimizes God, choosing to live in awe of Him sets you apart. It shapes your decisions, your attitude, and your relationship with Him.

So take a moment today. Reflect on who God is—His power, His holiness, His love. Let that understanding transform your heart.

Because when you truly stand in awe of God, everything else falls into place.

May the Lord bless you as you seek Him daily, and may His Word guide, encourage, and transform your life.

Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ (2 Corinthians 2:14).

God gets His greatest victories out of apparent defeats. Very often the enemy seems to triumph for a little, and God lets it be so; but then He comes in and upsets all the work of the enemy, overthrows the apparent victory, and as the Bible says, "turns the way of the wicked upside down." Thus He gives a great deal larger victory than we would have known if He had not allowed the enemy, seemingly, to triumph in the first place.

The story of the three Hebrew children being cast into the fiery furnace is a familiar one. Here was an apparent victory for the enemy. It looked as if the servants of the living God were going to have a terrible defeat. We have all been in places where it seemed as though we were defeated, and the enemy rejoiced. We can imagine what a complete defeat this looked to be. They fell down into the flames, and their enemies watched them to see them burn up in that awful fire, but were greatly astonished to see them walking around in the fire enjoying themselves. Nebuchadnezzar told them to "come forth out of the midst of the fire." Not even a hair was singed, nor was the smell of fire on their garments, "because there is no other god that can deliver after this sort."

This apparent defeat resulted in a marvelous victory.

Suppose that these three men had lost their faith and courage, and had complained, saying, "Why did not God keep us out of the furnace!" They would have been burned, and God would not have been glorified. If there is a great trial in your life today, do not own it as a defeat, but continue, by faith, to claim the victory through Him who is able to make you more than conqueror, and a glorious victory will soon be apparent. Let us learn that in all the hard places God brings us into, He is making opportunities for us to exercise such faith in Him as will bring about blessed results and greatly glorify His name.
